Deep into our DIY phase, we made a music video for the second single from Don’t Let Me Sleep with a more indie-punk vibe that blurred the line between basement rock and acid trip, and the video for Lion Run was off to the races.
The shoot took place in our basement studio on Broadway in Williamsburg which was the band’s home for almost nine years. Under the JMZ between the Marcy and Hewes stops, it was where we practiced, wrote and recorded our ideas, and stored all of our gear (at times, band members).
When it stunk in the Summer, we called it the funk dungeon. In the Winter, it was frigid, so we had two space-heaters that did absolutely nothing at all (knit hats and hoodies, always). It was a concrete bunker under a subway, the acoustics were terrible, the floor dirty, and the stairs rusty and rotten. We shared it with other ‘bands’ (loosely defined), and genuinely regarded it as our second home in New York.
Fun production notes – Ben’s Glasses are empty frames. Danny is playing without a kick pedal. The musical interlude is actually edited in from the last track on the album The Other Side of the World. Jim did the heavy lifting on this one, pulling together the ‘found-footage’ and editing the video. All the footage is stock footage so we didn’t have to pay (DIY baby).
Anyways, feel free come up with your own theories on what the video is about. Many believe that the song is about ‘keeping your enemies on their toes’, whatever that means.
